About the 2016’s Walk of Awareness

On the morning of May 20 1941 Nazi Germany came upon the Island of Crete and began a 10 day Airborne Invasion against The ANZACS, Greek and other Allied Forces and it’s Inhabitants The Cretan people.

On that same day a young Cretan man of only 16 1/2  old name Timotheus {Tim} Leonakis was called upon to pick up his weapon, once only used to hunt for food, but now was to be used to defend his people, his family, and his life on the Island he called home.

After the ten days the ANZACS and Allies were forced to evacuate with the help of the local Cretan people who continued to fight on till Germany surrendered in the summer of 1945.

In memory of that historical battle, Andreas, Timotheus son, has decided to walk the distance of the length of Crete and back.   Crete is 260 kms long.

On May 7th 2016 the Cretan Association of Queensland will hold their annual dance for the 75th anniversary in remembrance of The Battle of Crete, to be held at the Greek Club in West End.
